Lucasfilm is taking a decidedly different path in promoting Rogue One: A Star Wars Story than it did with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Only select bits of footage were released from the 7th film in the series, and it was hard to piece together any real plot points leading up the final days of release last December. The exact opposite is true with Rogue One. As the release date approaches for this first-ever Star Wars spin-off, we’re seeing more and more new footage every day.
Today, we get yet another TV spot that demands audiences ‘strap in’. There are some choice bits of previously unreleased footage shown off here. Most notably involving Stormtroopers. We get to see more of what is sure to be one of the most memorable scenes in the movie, where Donnie Yen’s blind warrior Chirrut Imwe takes on a battalion of Stormtroopers single-handedly.
Just as cool, we get to see the new droid K-2SO, performed through motion capture by Alan Tudyk, in action. He is seen on what is believed to be the Death Star, where he also single handedly takes on a battalion of Stormtroopers. And in a moment that would make Chewbacca proud, he is seen picking up one of the white soldiers and tossing him into other members of his team. Here’s the official Rogue One synopsis.
“In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.”
This latest TV spot follows international trailers that delivered quite a bit of new footage. Included was a look at Darth Vader and the first appearance of a Kyber crystal in a live-action movie. The adventure was directed by Gareth Edwards and stars Felicity Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, Ben Mendelsohn, Diego Luna and Forest Whitaker. Take a look at the latest footage courtesy of Youtube. Rogue One is in theaters everywhere December 18.
