Just one day after we reported that Pacific Rim 2 has added Tian Jing to the cast, and that filming begins in November, another cast member has come aboard. Levi Meaden, who stars in the new Syfy series Aftermath, has joined the growing cast for this sci-fi sequel. Levi Meaden will be playing a character named Ilya, who is described as “an irreverent and offbeat cadet.”
Variety has word on the Pacific Rim 2 casting, with Levi Meaden joining a cast that includes John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny and Tian Jing. John Boyega is playing the son of Idris Elba’s Stacker Pentecost, who sacrificed himself at the end of the first Pacific Rim movie, but no details have been given about the other characters. We also recently reported that Charlie Hunnam will not be reprising his role as Raleigh Beckett from the original Pacific Rim.
The first movie was set in a world where humanity was forced to build massive robots known as Jaegers, to fight giant monsters known as kaiju and stop them from destroying the entire planet. Our previous report also revealed that part of the production will be set in China. Another report from earlier this month revealed that this sci-fi sequel has added a cast member from the upcoming indie The Belko Experiment, but it was never confirmed who this cast member is.
Pacific Rim earned $101.8 million domestically and $411 million worldwide, from a massive $190 million budget. There had been numerous reports that Legendary either delayed or canceled the sequel, but that all changed when Legendary merged with Chinese investment firm Dalian Wanda Group. Pacific Rim earned more in China ($111.9 million) than any other market in the world. No story details have been revealed at this time, but filming will take place in Australia and China this November.
Pacific Rim 2 will be directed by Stephen S. De Knight (Daredevil), from a screenplay that has been worked on by Guillermo del Toro, Travis Beacham, Jon Spaihts, Emily Carmichael, Zak Penn, Kira Snyder and Derek Connolly. The release of Pacific Rim: Maelstrom falls between the release of 20th Century Fox’s Larrikins and Warner Bros.’ shark thriller Meg. Levi Meaden has had recurring roles in The 100, The Killing and Olympus, and he stars as Matt Copeland in Syfy’s new series Aftermath, which debuts Tuesday, September 27.
