2K has announced the formation of a brand new studio based out of Montreal, Canada called Cloud Chamber, with their first project being a new entry in the acclaimed Bioshock series.
In the press release (which you can read here via Business Wire), 2K said the studio, which will also have offices in 2K’s San Francisco HQ, will be made up of ‘a collective of storytellers eager to push the frontlines of interactive entertainment by making unique, entertaining and thoughtful experiences that engage the world’.
Heading up the team is 22 year veteran Kelley Gilmore, who was a twenty year veteran at Firaxis working on Civilization and the XCOM series. She’ll be joined by Bioshock veterans Hoagy de la Plante (Creative Director), Scott Sinclair (Art Director) and Jonathan Pelling (Design Director) who have all worked on previous games in the series.
The studio was created specifically to work on the new Bioshock game, Gilmore said in an interview with MCVUK in which she also mentioned that she was ‘equally excited and cautious’ to be working on a new Bioshock, saying ‘Making the next BioShock is a tremendous responsibility that does not fall lightly on any of us at Cloud Chamber. However, the chance to start a new studio under one of the most successful publishing labels in the interactive entertainment industry – all while working on an iconic franchise with incredibly talented and kind people – was a once in a lifetime opportunity.’
It is, of course, very early days yet for the project – there’s no platforms announced as of yet, and the press release mentions it’ll be developed ‘over the next several years’ so best not hold your breath, but Gilmore did confirm that Ken Levine’s Ghost Games will not be working on the project, saying in another interview with GamesRadar that ‘Ken and his team at Ghost Story Games are fully engaged in developing a new experience that will surely be another incredible game for all of us to enjoy. He is not affiliated with Cloud Chamber or the development of our BioShock title. ‘
