New Marvel X-Men Comic Mocks Batman v Superman

Back in June, Marvel Comics appeared to take a blatant shot at Warner Bros.’ Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in their comic Spider-Man/Deadpool issue #6. The issue featured a movie poster for Nighthawk vs. Hyperion: Yawn of Boredom, which both Deadpool and Spider-Man commented on after leaving a screening. It seems that Marvel Comics has taken another subtle shot at this divisive superhero movie once again with their issue of Uncanny X-Men Annual #1, which was released last week.

ComicBook.com discovered that this comic features a backup story written and drawn by Anthony Piper, which features Domino being contacted by the mutant Sunspot, who is now the head of the Avengers Idea Mechanics and the New Avengers. Sunspot wants Domino to conduct a secret mission for him, which involves heading to South America to kill a South American military leader who has been hunting down and killing mutants. When Domino arrives at this facility, she comes across two guards which she quickly kills, but before she does so, they tell a story that pokes fun at Batman v. Superman‘s “mother” connection.

One guard begins the story by stating that he shot an unidentified person in the leg, but before he’s about to finish him off, his victim started screaming “Martha! Martha!” The other guard recognizes that Martha is the same name as his colleague’s mother. The first guard goes onto reveals that he simply could not kill this person, since their mothers share the same name. Before he can elaborate any further, though, Domino quickly kills them both. In Batman v. Superman, Martha Wayne was portrayed by Lauren Cohan in a flashback sequence, while Diane Lane reprised her role as Martha Kent from 2013’s Man of Steel.

The Spider-Man/Deadpool comic, which was written by Comedy Bang Bang creator Scott Aukerman, also took a shot at the Martha connection. The Nighthawk vs. Hyperion: Yawn of Boredom poster featured the tagline “You won’t believe their mothers share a first name.” This connection between Batman (Ben Affleck) and Superman’s (Henry Cavill) mothers was widely criticized when Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice hit theaters in March. While the film was trashed by critics, it still put up solid numbers at the box office, taking in $330.3 million domestically, the seventh highest total this year, and $873.3 million internationally, the sixth highest tally this year.

We already know the Domino character will appear in Deadpool 2, and given the first movie’s tendencies to poke fun at other superhero movies, it’s certainly possible this 20th Century Fox sequel will also take some shots at Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The front runners for Domino include Lizzy Caplan, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Sienna Miller, Sofia Boutella, Stephanie Sigman and Sylvia Hoeks. Take a look at this comic book panel from Uncanny X-Men Annual #1, which pokes fun at Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
