Doctor Strange 2 May Include This Marvel Villain, Funko Pop Poster Unveiled

True to the nature of all things Marvel, we can’t even get to the official release of Doctor Strange before everyone is talking about Doctor Strange 2. While we won’t get this sequel until the next decade, it turns out director Scott Derrickson already has a plan in place. And it may just include one of the scariest Marvel villains around. Sounds exciting, right?

Doctor Strange is already out in various parts of the world, before it makes its domestic debut in theaters this coming Friday. And word of mouth has been great so far. Fans are cheering this second installment in Marvel’s Phase 3 for being visually spectacular and pushing the lines of what we expect in a Marvel movie. Some speculate that it could open to the tune of $75 million, which is stellar for a first time Marvel movie that many non-comic fans aren’t familiar with. While a sequel hasn’t been announced yet, it certainly seems inevitable.

It has already been announced that Benedict Cumberbatch will return in Avengers: Infinity War. And he plays a big role, as the Sorcerer Supreme is the one tasked with reuniting the fallen superheroes to fight Thanos, a threat to all realities. But the Russo Bros. are handling all the heavy lifting on that sequel. Scott Derrickson won’t be involved, which leaves him open to planning Stephen Strange‘s solo return.

Many who have already seen Doctor Strange think that main villain Kaecilius is in place to set up a larger world of villains for this particular Marvel superhero. And it’s already being speculated that Mordo is being set up as the villain of the impending follow-up. But that character may get his due in Infinity War. At least, it doesn’t sound like Doctor Strange 2 is going in that direction. Speaking with IGN, the horror director had his to say about the next potential Doctor Strange villain.

“I really like the character of Nightmare and the concept that the Nightmare Realm is a dimension. […] That’s early – that’s like the first Strange tale. I think that’s in the introductory episode of Doctor Strange, and I always loved that.”

Nightmare is a little bit like the comic book world’s answer to Freddy Krueger. He has the ability to bring people in and out of both the Nightmare Realm and the Dream Dimension while they sleep. When he has his victim in place, he can torment and torture them with the help of his dreadful dream demons. Scott Derrickson originally wanted to use the character in this first Doctor Strange movie. but it wasn’t meant to be this time around.

“We decided not to do that because that’s a bit of a complex idea to try to introduce everything we do introduce and introduce the idea of nightmares themselves as being a dimension. I hope somewhere down the line we do get to explore that because I think that’s [a] super cool concept.”

At this time, Scott Derrickson is not officially confirmed to return for Doctor Strange 2. And the movie hasn’t even been announced yet. But if the first one does as well as everyone is expecting, we’re sure to hear it announced as one of the three previous release dates set up by Marvel for the first part of the incoming decade. It’s almost a no brainer that Doctor Strange will play a key role in Marvel Phase 4. And this sounds like a really cool way to expand the standalone franchise.

In other news, Disney Movie Rewards has just unveiled a really cool new poster. Well, it’s cool if you’re in love with Funko Pops. The characters in Doctor Strange have been reimagined as this popular toy for this exclusive one-sheet. It’s actually available for free when you link a Disney Movie Rewards account with a Regal Crown Club membership. Maybe that’s a hassle, but this is a pretty cool poster. Take a look.
