Amy Poehler to Make Directorial Debut with Netflix's Wine Country

Amy Poehler is making the jump to director with her latest project Wine Country. The comedy movie, which is being produced by Netflix, will be Poehler’s feature directorial debut. The former Saturday Night Live cast member is also going to star in and produce the comedy for the streaming service. As an added bonus, the project is also going to reunite Poehler with Tina Fey, in addition to several other SNL alum.

Wine Country will also star Rachel Dratch, Ana Gasteyer, Paula Pell, Maya Rudolph and Emily Spivey, who wrote the script for the comedy as well. The movie is said to center on a group of friends who take a trip to wine country in Napa Valley in order to celebrate a 50th birthday. Beyond that, much of what we’re going to see in Amy Poehler’s feature directorial debut remains a mystery. Netflix confirmed the news by posting a musical video of the cast who were gathered together in celebration.

“It’s happening, Amy Poehler’s directorial debut, Wine Country, is coming soon to Netflix! Starring Amy Poehler, Rachel Dratch, Ana Gasteyer, Paula Pell, Maya Rudolph, Emily Spivey and featuring Tina Fey. Get excited. Get real excited.”

Emily Spivey worked with Amy Poehler on Parks and Recreation, so the two have chemistry together. Poehler also has some directing experience under her belt. She directed several episodes of Parks and Rec, in addition to episodes of the Comedy Central series Broad City. But making the jump to an ensemble feature is definitely going to be a test for Poehler, but there’s little doubt she’ll be able to successfully make the leap from actor/producer/writer to movie director.

Netflix has shifted dramatically in recent years from a streaming service primarily to house licensed content to one of the biggest producers of original content out there. The company is investing $8 billion in original programming this year alone and hopes to eventually have at least half of their library consists of Netflix original titles. However, not all of their content, especially when it comes to their movies, has been able to deliver. Movies like Bright and Mute were expensive endeavors for the streaming service, but failed to win over critics. Still, Netflix continues to grow their subscriber base, and Bright 2 has already been given the green light. Perhaps they’ll have more luck with Wine Country, in terms of acclaim.

Despite the fact that news of this movie is just coming to light, it’s happening rather fast. Wine Country is reportedly set to begin filming toward the end of this month in Los Angeles. Amy Poehler will produce the movie through her company, Paper Kite Productions. There’s no word yet on when Netflix plans to release Wine Country, but with production kicking off shortly, it seems likely we’ll be seeing the movie in early 2019.
