In Monster, we got to see a side of Charlize Theron that was quite unglamorous and raw. Now, she returns to those hardcore roots of humanity, stripping everything away to play a struggling mother in Tully. The official trailer has arrived, and it’s as funny as it is bittersweet.
Charlize Theron reunites with her Young Adult team for Tully, the tale of a harrowed mom and her blessed night nanny who form a unique bond. The movie is directed by Jason Reitman, who also directed Young Adult, along with other acclaimed hits such as Juno and Up in the Air. Writing the movie is Diablo Cody, who penned the script for Young Adult as well as her breakout indie hit Juno.
This new comedy follows Marlo (Academy Award winner Charlize Theron), a mother of three including a newborn, is gifted a night nanny by her brother (Mark Duplass). Hesitant to the extravagance at first, Marlo comes to form a unique bond with the thoughtful, surprising, and sometimes challenging young nanny named Tully (Mackenzie Davis).
Marlo is very apprehensive about bringing a stranger into her family. As she explains to her brother, “I don’t want a stranger in my house. That’s like a Lifetime movie where the nanny tries to kill the family and the mom survives and she has to walk with a cane at the end.” About making this unique and sometimes very hilarious movie, Theron had this to say to People Magazine.
“I don’t think I could’ve done this film without having experienced motherhood yet, so this film came at the perfect time for me. There’s so much pressure on parents to balance everything in their life so perfectly and to do it with a smile. So I wanted to tell a story that shows parents, ‘Hey, life is a lot harder for us, and it’s okay if you have to get help.'”
Joining in on the sometimes fun, sometimes horrifying aspects of raising three children by herself is Ron Livingston as Drew, Marlo’s husband, who is absent from watching his children grow up. The movie was acquired by Focus Features in May of last year. It finally premiered to its first audiences at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where it was greeted with glowing reviews and praise for Charlize Theron’s performance.
While this is the second collaboration between Charlize Theron and her writer and director, it’s the third feature film to bring Reitman and Cody together. But it surely won’t be their last. The movie is being called fearless, raw and physically intense. It will be in theaters April 20, which is a holiday for some. So it has to contend with Super Troopers 2 playing next door. This may not be the funner movie, but it could end up being the better bet for anyone who has struggled through the joys parenthood.
