It’s probably just a coincidence. But in the old Star Wars Droids animated series, which debuted two years after Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, there are two characters that hold a few similarities to both Rey and Kylo Ren. As we know, these two, who could be blood related, are fresh to the Star Wars canon. And in a sequel that had more than its fair share of callbacks, many believed these two to be wholly original. Well, that may or may not be the cast.
The Mr. Sunday Movies Youtube Channel has just released another episode of their Caravan of Garbage series. The show focuses on old things that are pretty much terrible. And this month they are focusing on Star Wars related media in celebration of Rogue One hitting theaters in a few weeks. Their first order of business is the 1985 animated series Droids, which debuted on ABC alongside a second show focused on the Ewoks. Here, they look at the first episode of this series, and low and behold, if Rey herself doesn’t appear to show up. The Mr. Sunday Movie guys have this to say about the episode and those Rey and Kylo Ren references from over 30 years ago.
“Welcome to a very special Star Wars themed season of Caravan of Garbage, the show where we delve into the past to uncover some of the hidden forgotten gems. A comic! A movie! A game! Who knows? This week, the first Star Wars TV series, Droids, featuring the adventures of C3P0 and R2D2 plus the origins or Rey. But probably not I dunno.”
Coming in around the five minute and thirty second mark, we’re introduced to a mysterious desert warrior who certainly resembles Rey, costume and all. This video perfectly matches up a shot from the animated series with the shot in the downed Star Destroyer where Rey is first unveiled to the audience. Both characters put their goggles up, on their forehead, and lower their scarfs. Both are on a desert planet. As the video says, this is nothing more than a coincidence. Or is it. Says the video.
“We see the big reveal. The mysterious desert warrior is in fact a pretty lady. A beautiful woman. In a lot of ways, this has a lot of parallels to future Star Wars things. But then I’m like, it’s probably just a coincidence.”
Later on the video, we see a scene that is also a prelude to the Pod Race in The Phantom Menace. Again, just another coincidence? Later on in the episode, the mysterious figure that sure does resemble Rey shows back up, and without her headgear on, she doesn’t look much like Daisy Ridley. It is revealed that this character’s name is Kia, like the car. In the early drafts of The Force Awakens, Rey’s original name was Kiera. The narrators of this particular video aren’t sure what to make of this. Perhaps residue from the show was floating around inside J.J. Abrams mind at the time this was all being conceived?
The video doesn’t stretch too far beyond the first episode of Droids. It only ran for 1 season, giving fans exactly 13 episodes. Towards the end, though, they do reach deeper into the show’s episodic run to discover a character who is named Gir Kybo Ren-Cha, and that certainly sounds a lot like Kylo Ren. Albeit, Gir doesn’t look anything like Adam Driver. This guy is a chubby Genghis Khan wannabe in a half-shirt. The names do sound a little too similar, and the narrators have to wonder if everything in the Star Wars galaxy is related. You can take a look at all of this for yourself in the engrossing 18 minute examination of the very first Droids episode.
